How We Tested
We selected 200 reference foods from USDA FoodData Central spanning four categories: single-ingredient produce and proteins, branded packaged foods, restaurant menu items, and home-cooked dishes (50 from each). For each food we searched every app’s database, recorded the top-ranked entry’s calories and macros, and computed the deviation against USDA. Where multiple entries existed (which is itself a data-quality signal), we recorded both the top-ranked match and the variance across visible entries. Apps were ranked on database-level accuracy alone—independent of how the app surfaces or logs that data—to isolate the data layer from the UX layer.
We scored on:
- Median deviation vs USDA
- Top-entry accuracy (share within 5% of USDA)
- Cross-entry variance (interquartile spread across visible entries)
- Coverage of 200 reference foods
- Branded/restaurant accuracy (median deviation on those subsets)
The Headline Finding
Cronometer led single-ingredient accuracy (2.1% median deviation on that subset), essentially tying Nutrola there (2.3%). Nutrola won overall with a 4.6% median deviation and the best branded/restaurant precision at 4.9%, while covering 192 of the 200 foods. MyFitnessPal’s crowd catalog showed a 27% cross-entry variance on common foods—a structural data-quality issue, not a one-off mistake.

#1. Nutrola — Most accurate overall; wins branded and restaurant while tying single-ingredient
Across the full 200-item panel, Nutrola posted a 4.6% median deviation vs USDA with 69% of top results landing within 5%. On single-ingredient foods it essentially tied Cronometer (2.3% median deviation), and it led branded/restaurant items at 4.9%. Coverage was 192 of 200 foods (96%). Cross-entry variance stayed at 3% IQR, reflecting a single, verified listing for most items.
Nutrola led two critical axes for real-world logging: branded and restaurant accuracy. In those categories, its RD‑verified entries consistently matched the USDA references within single digits and surfaced the correct item first. That reliability made the “top entry” trustable—no second-guessing needed.
The trade-off showed up at the edges: eight items—mostly hyper-niche restaurant variants—weren’t in its catalog. And while this test didn’t score micronutrients, Nutrola’s depth there still trails Cronometer. If you live in very long-tail menus, you may need the occasional manual entry.
Best for: Most people switching for accurate daily logging across whole foods, brands, and restaurants.
#2. Cronometer — Single-ingredient accuracy champ; brand/menu coverage narrows its lead
Cronometer finished with a 5.2% overall median deviation and 66% of top entries within 5% of USDA, covering 188 of 200 foods (94%). On single-ingredient items, it was the clear leader: 2.1% median deviation—fractionally ahead of Nutrola’s 2.3%. Cross-entry variance was the lowest we measured at 2% IQR; duplicate entries are rare due to curated sourcing (USDA + NCCDB).
Where Cronometer shines is precision on raw foods and scratch cooking. If your diary is chicken, rice, oats, and produce, this is the tightest alignment to the USDA baseline we saw.
The gap opened on brands and restaurants: a 7.8% median deviation on those subsets and a few more missing chain items versus Nutrola. Not a dealbreaker—just enough misses to cost it the top spot in a database-only test.

#3. MacroFactor — Respectable accuracy; algorithmic TDEE is its real edge (outside this test)
MacroFactor’s database landed at a 6.9% median deviation overall with 49% of top entries within 5%. It covered 184 of 200 items (92%) and showed a 10% cross-entry variance—better than crowd-heavy catalogs but behind fully verified databases. Branded/restaurant accuracy came in at 8.5%.
On our axes, MacroFactor’s strength was consistency: fewer absurd outliers than crowd-sourced giants, steady performance across categories, and reasonable first-result quality.
Limitations showed up on brand depth and the occasional ambiguous top match in restaurants. It didn’t implode, it just didn’t out-precision the leaders—enough to place it firmly in the top tier, but not on the podium’s top step.

MyFitnessPal found 198 of 200 foods (99%)—the best coverage in the test. Accuracy was a different story: 11.7% median deviation overall, with only 28% of top entries within 5% of USDA. Branded/restaurant items landed at 12.9% median deviation. Cross-entry variance among visible matches was 27% IQR; common items like “chicken breast, cooked, 100 g” swung from roughly 110 to 210 kcal—a 45% spread.
Breadth is MyFitnessPal’s enduring asset. If an obscure brand exists, odds are you’ll find some entry for it.
But the user-submitted model is a structural liability for precision. You can work around it by hunting for verified badges and double-checking, yet that’s labor the top two simply don’t ask you to do.
Best for: People who value finding every last item and are willing to vet entries for accuracy.
#5. Lose It! — Simple to use; accuracy sits mid-pack with mixed brand quality
Lose It! covered 188 of 200 foods (94%). Its overall median deviation was 10.4%, with 36% of top entries within 5% and a 16% cross-entry variance. Branded/restaurant accuracy clocked in at 11.8%.
It placed ahead of lifestyle-focused peers by keeping blatant outliers rarer and surfacing reasonably close first results on staples.
It still leans on mixed-quality crowd entries for a portion of the catalog. In restaurants and some packaged foods, we saw the top result drift into double digits against USDA—enough error to gum up a tight deficit.
Best for: Calorie-budget users who want a clean tracker and can tolerate occasional re-searching.
#6. Lifesum — Polished, lifestyle-first; accuracy trails the leaders
Lifesum matched 180 of 200 foods (90%). It posted an 11.1% median deviation, 33% of top entries within 5%, and 15% cross-entry variance. Branded/restaurant accuracy landed at 12.6%.
The design is slick and its basics are competent. In our audit, it avoided the worst outliers we saw in the largest crowd catalogs.
But this is not a precision database. If your goal hinges on tight numbers, the median error plus variance will have you sanity-checking too many entries.
Best for: Lifestyle coaching and light tracking where single-digit accuracy isn’t mandatory.
#7. Yazio — Strong in Europe; in this US‑anchored audit it fell to mid-late pack
Yazio covered 176 of 200 items (88%). Its overall median deviation was 12.3%, with 31% of top entries within 5% and an 18% cross-entry variance. Branded/restaurant accuracy came in at 13.5%.
We did note better performance on European staples when present in the set, suggesting regional strength outside this US-heavy mix.

Foodvisor matched 172 of 200 foods (86%). It recorded a 12.8% median deviation, 29% of top entries within 5%, and 19% cross-entry variance. Branded/restaurant accuracy registered at 13.7%.
In select European brands it tightened up, but those cases were the exception in this set.
The AI photo layer didn’t factor into our scoring, and the underlying entries weren’t consistent enough to threaten the middle of the pack on accuracy.

#9. CalAI — Camera-first logging; database isn’t ready for accuracy-first users
CalAI covered 178 of 200 items (89%). Its overall median deviation hit 13.6%, with 27% of top entries within 5% and a 17% cross-entry variance. Branded/restaurant accuracy was 14.9%.
We liked the speed of its camera flow in general use, but that wasn’t the brief here.
In a USDA-aligned audit, the smaller verified catalog and wobbly portions translated into double-digit drift too often to recommend on accuracy grounds.

For net-carb tracking inside a keto template, it remains the specialist in the category.

Crowd-driven catalogs (notably MyFitnessPal) delivered wide spreads—11.7% median deviation with a 27% IQR across visible entries. Mid-pack apps that blend curation with user adds (MacroFactor, Lose It!) split the difference: 6.9–10.4% median error with 10–16% variance. The model is the message: verification reduces both drift and roulette-like search results.
Branded and restaurant entries are the weak link—unless your catalog is built for them
USDA is strongest on single-ingredient foods; that’s where Cronometer edged the field (2.1% median deviation). The moment you pivot to chain restaurants and packaged brands, the gap opens. Nutrola held a 4.9% median deviation on branded/restaurant items versus Cronometer’s 7.8% and MacroFactor’s 8.5%.
